The use of the term physical literacy has steadily grown since the early 1990’s, due to the promotional and philosophical work of Dr. Margaret Whitehead (M. Whitehead, 2001). Consistent with her philosophical roots, she has a pluralistic view of the term, with a definition/concept that has evolved over time, starting in 1990 (M. E. Whitehead, 1990). Despite the increasing references to physical literacy from the early 1990’s and on, this concept has in fact been mentioned much prior; as early as 1884. Although, the original reference is often attributed to George Morrison in 1969, there are references to physical literacy that date back as early as 1884, where an American in the Army Corp of Engineers utilized the term in colorful description of the physicality of an indigenous culture during a feast. Health and Physical Education Teachers Face Obesity Epidemic with New Medicine: Physical Literacy
BEND, OR, October 12, 2017 – As World Obesity Day passes, newly released data shows the United States leading the world in childhood obesity. The World Obesity Federation said “[they] are calling on all governments, health service providers, insurers and philanthropic organisations to prioritise investment in tackling obesity. This means investment in obesity treatment services, early intervention and prevention.” This weekend over 200 health and physical educators, who reach over 100,000 students, will travel from all over the state for the 103rd Annual Oregon Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) conference to learn how to tackle the childhood obesity epidemic using a new approach called physical literacy.

The Oregon SHAPE Board of Directors is looking for an individual from each school district to “Be A Champion”!
Champions are individuals who;
- advocate for health and physical education on a daily basis.
- go out of their way to support health and physical educators in their district.
- provide effective health and physical education programs to their students.
- spend a few minutes each month sharing new and exciting information with their colleagues.
